Cumhuriyet street that passes through the heart of the historic market place and inns is becoming the showcase of Bursa with the Nostalgic Tramway project. Work is at its final stages on the 1.5 km nostalgic tramway route that starts from Gokdere Meydancik Bridge, follows the New Cumhuriyet Street, passes right through the center of historic inns and reaches Zafer Plaza shopping center. The route will be closed to vehicular traffic, besides making the street open only to pedestrians, facades of the buildings facing the street will be renovated and thus the region will turn into a center of attraction. As the efforts to get Bursa’s Market Place and Inns district into UNESCO’s World Heritage List continue, the Nostalgic Tramway Project will add extra value to the area. The project which resembles the Istiklal Street model in Istanbul will change the trading practices in the area. By moving the wholesalers to another area and opening cafes, restaurants, entertainment and accommodation centers in their place Cumhuriyet Street will become an important center that is full of life day and night. The project includes facade renovations which will make Cumhuriyet Street fit Bursa’s historical image.
